This dojo started operating in Honolulu in 1957, when Shihan Bobby
Lowe opened the first Kyokushin Karate dojo outside of Japan, as
authorized by Sosai Mas Oyama, founder of Kyokushin Karate. After
Shihan Lowe passed away in 2011, his legacy continues at Hawaii
Kyokushin Karate under Chief Instructor Herbert Ishida, 5
th
dan, and
assistant instructor Dean Harada, 3
rd
dan.
Classes cover striking and blocking techniques, kata, freestyle full-
contact sparring and self-defense. Also included are traditional Japanese
customs and courtesies as practiced in the dojo.
Besides physical conditioning, other benefits a student may obtain from
karate training are self-confidence, motivation, mental discipline and
accountability.
